Using AutoCat‚Ñ¢ is very easy, because you have nothing to learn. If you know how to use the Find... command from the Finder‚Ñ¢, you know how to use AutoCat‚Ñ¢.
• AutoCat™ maintains the hierarchical directory structure of your disks ; it copies folders from the disk into your "Cataloged disks folder" and, instead of copying files from the disk, makes aliases of the original files and puts them in their respective folders in the "Cataloged disks folder". When AutoCat™ is working, the mouse pointer is replaced by an AutoCat™ animated cursor.
• The catalog is automatically updated by AutoCat™. You don't have to do any maintenance. Just use the Find... command or navigate manually through the folder created by AutoCat™ to find your files, exactly as if they were on your hard disk.
• Using the Find... command from the Finder™, specify the name of your file and, if you wish, its creation and modification dates. The suitably-named Finder™ will find the file and select the alias created by AutoCat™. Open the alias by double-clicking it, or select the "Find Original" button in the Get Info… window of the alias. The Finder™ will ask you to insert the diskette "so-and-so".
• You can also access to your catalog from a dialog box when you do an Open... command for example. The Mac will ask you to insert the disk when it needs it.
• For each cataloged disk, AutoCat™ creates an empty file (that you cannot open) whose name indicates the used space and the capacity of the disk, in MegaBytes. For instance, "0.4MB / 1.4MB" means that there is 0.4MB used on a 1.4MB capacity disk.
